US Pauses Arms Shipment to Israel Amid Gaza Conflict
Concern Over Potential Israeli Invasion of Rafah
By Mike Stone, Steve Holland, and Phil Stewart
Last week, the Biden administration halted a weapons shipment to Israel due to Israeli intentions to potentially invade the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The administration is aiming to prevent a large-scale assault on Rafah, where numerous Palestinians have taken shelter from conflict in other parts of Gaza.
Review of Weapon Transfers
According to a senior administration official speaking anonymously, the US began reviewing proposed weapons transfers to Israel that could be utilized in Rafah as Israeli leaders were contemplating an incursion. This review resulted in the pause of a shipment last week, which included 1,800 2,000-lb bombs and 1,700 500-lb bombs. The focus is especially on the use of the 2,000-lb bombs in densely populated urban areas, following previous experiences in Gaza.
Delay in Shipments
Sources revealed that the delayed shipments involved Boeing-made Joint Direct Attack Munitions and Small Diameter Bombs. The postponement comes as the US urges Israel to delay its planned offensive in Rafah to minimize civilian casualties.
Confirmation and Response
While the White House and Pentagon declined to comment, Israeli forces did seize the main border crossing between Gaza and Egypt in Rafah on Tuesday. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre affirmed the US commitment to Israel’s security while engaging in direct conversations with Israeli counterparts to protect civilian lives. The Pentagon clarified that there is no policy decision to withhold arms from Israel.
Effects of the Conflict
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in countless casualties on both sides. The prolonged military campaign in Gaza has raised concerns about the welfare of civilians and has sparked protests calling for support withdrawal for Israel.
Israeli Response
A senior Israeli official, speaking anonymously, acknowledged the reports of potential arms shipment delays but emphasized Israel’s willingness to defend itself by any means necessary.
Overall, the situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts continue to address the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The pause in arms shipments reflects the delicate balance between supporting allies and mitigating the impact of conflict on civilians.
