Meeting of US, Canada, and Mexico Agriculture Ministers
Discussion on Agriculture Policies
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a forthcoming meeting with the agriculture ministers of Canada and Mexico. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Colorado, as confirmed by Vilsack during the Commodity Classic event in Houston.
Trade Disputes and Resolutions
The U.S. and Mexico are currently embroiled in a trade dispute concerning Mexico’s 2020 decree to ban genetically modified corn consumption. This ban could potentially impact the U.S. imports of this grain. On the other hand, the U.S. resolved a trade dispute with Canada last year over the country’s restrictions on U.S. dairy import quotas.
Agenda of the Meeting
Vilsack expressed his intention to address concerns regarding Mexico’s biotechnology approach to corn and advocate for more open dairy markets in Canada during the upcoming meeting. U.S. Chief Agriculture Negotiator Doug McKalip anticipates resolving the ongoing trade dispute with Mexico by the end of the year.
Enhancing Bilateral Relations
The meeting aims to foster collaboration and address key agricultural issues affecting the North American region. By engaging in productive discussions, the agriculture ministers seek to strengthen trade relations and ensure sustainable agricultural practices.
