China’s Huawei announced on Sunday its plans to transfer core technologies and resources from its smart car unit to a new joint company in partnership with automaker Changan Auto. The smart car unit has demonstrated strong sales performance in several new vehicles.

New Joint Company to Focus on Intelligent Automotive Systems

The new joint company will be responsible for research and development, production, sales, and service of intelligent automotive systems and component solutions, as stated in a press release by Huawei.

Negotiations for Equity Ratio and Capital Contribution

The equity ratio and amount of capital to be contributed will be negotiated by Huawei and Changan Auto, according to a filing with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange by Chongqing Changan Automobile.

Joint Efforts to Lead the Automotive Industry

Huawei and Changan Auto aim to jointly support the new company in becoming a leader in automotive intelligent systems and component solutions within China, as per the filing.

Collaboration for Industry Innovation and Transformation

At the signing ceremony in Shenzhen, Huawei’s managing director and chairman of the smart car solutions unit, Yu Chengdong, expressed the company’s commitment to collaborating with more auto firms to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the electrification and intelligent transformation of the auto industry.

Huawei’s Collaboration with Other Automakers

Huawei has existing partnerships with Changan Auto and Seres Group, with whom it jointly produces Aito branded cars, including the M7 model. Additionally, Huawei collaborated with Chinese automaker Chery to produce the S7 sedan under a new marquee, Luxeed, positioning it as a competitor to Tesla’s Model S.

Strong Sales Performance for Aito Smart Cars

Huawei revealed that it had received over 50,000 orders for its revamped M7 model within the first 25 days of sales, positioning Aito among China’s top-selling new energy vehicle manufacturers based on August data.
