Coast Guard Confirms Oil Sheen Disappearance
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that after an overflight on Sunday, there was no longer a detectable oil sheen off the coast of Huntington Beach, California, following the cleanup of an oil spill discovered on Friday.
Recovery Assets Demobilized
Offshore recovery assets have been demobilized after retrieving approximately 85 gallons (322 liters) of product from the ocean, as reported by the agency.
Continued Shoreline Cleanup
Shoreline cleanup teams are actively removing tar balls along the beaches in Huntington Beach, having already eliminated about 800 pounds (363 kg) of oily waste and tar balls.
Oil Spill Spotting and Investigation
The Coast Guard initially spotted the oil spill on Friday approximately 2.8 miles (4.5 km) off Huntington Beach, near two drilling platforms. An investigation into the cause of the oil spill is currently underway, according to the agency’s Saturday statement.
Platform Elly’s Reported Spill
Beta Offshore, a subsidiary of Amplify Energy Corp, reported a potential spill of produced water from its offshore Platform Elly off Huntington Beach on Friday, leading to the shutdown of a pipeline as per a regulatory filing.
Discrepancy in Reports
The Coast Guard clarified on Sunday that while Platform Elly reported a discharge of produced water on March 8, the characteristics of the produced water do not align with the observed sheen, suggesting they are unrelated.
