US Coast Guard Continues Search for Source of Gulf of Mexico Oil Leak
Coast Guard Seeks Source of Oil Leak in Gulf of Mexico
The U.S. Coast Guard is currently investigating a leak from an underwater pipeline off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. The estimated amount of crude oil released from the pipeline is over a million gallons, and efforts are underway to locate the source of the leak.
Pipeline Shutdown and Oil Recovery Efforts
Main Pass Oil Gathering Co (MPOG) closed the 67-mile long pipeline after crude oil was observed around 19 miles offshore of the Mississippi River Delta. The Coast Guard is actively working on oil recovery efforts and using underwater devices to survey the pipeline in order to pinpoint the source of the leak.
Extent of the Leak and Response Efforts
The Coast Guard has estimated the volume of the leak to be 1.1 million gallons, with no reported injuries or shoreline impacts thus far. The cause of the leak is currently under investigation, and the National Response Team has been activated to coordinate the response to the oil pollution incident.
Owner’s Response
Third Coast Infrastructure, the owner of MPOG, has declined to comment on the situation and referred all questions to the Coast Guard as the cleanup efforts continue.
The U.S. Coast Guard is working diligently to address the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, taking necessary steps to locate the source of the leak and mitigate its impact.
